Mexico Secrets (Retiring in Mexico) By Lucette Burrows

Everyone knows Mexico has amazing weather and beaches, but Mexico’s little secret is that it is one of the easiest countries in the world to move to, or retire!

One of the reasons why people are moving and retiring to Mexico (and a rarely advertised fact) is the fact that applying for a visa that allows you to live here is akin to applying for a passport. In most countries like the US, Australia, etc it can take 18 months or longer to get just a student visa! Mexico welcomes foreign investment, and welcomes the economic stimulus that expats bring, so they make it incredibly easy.

First of all, when you arrive at the airport (or border crossing) they automatically give you a visa that allows you to stay up to 6 months. If you leave for 1 day and come back, you get another visa good for 6 months. If you want to apply for an FM3 Visa that allows you to come when you want, stay as long as you want, and leave when you want the process is simple; just like a passport application you fill out the forms, and deliver them with pictures and a small stack of paperwork to the immigration office.

It typically takes 3 – 6 weeks for processing, and then you pick up your new visa!
